CEATI recognized that there was a lack of available resources and standards that would help utilities identify the latest and greatest and most effective advanced diagnostic testing and technologies that existing for evaluating the performance of underground cables. There was a need to establish an easy-to-digest guide that provided in-depth information on available testing technologies and how these could be applied in order to assess cable reliability and performance.
The CEATI Advanced Cable Diagnostic Test Techniques for XLPE, HPFF and LPFF Cable Systems (T183700 #3423) initiative established best-in-class guidelines for the advanced diagnostic testing for typical medium-voltage underground cables. For each testing methodology evaluated, this initiative provided overall benefits, costs, drawbacks and overall applicability of the test, thereby allowing utilities to select the right test for their specific application.
Advanced cable diagnostic testing ultimately allows utilities to avoid cost-intensive failures and reliability impacts. Through the use of this guide, utilities can identify the right test for their specific application.
